VC4 Latvia Healthcare Facility
VC4, one of Latvia’s most advanced medical centres, created two new operating theatres that combine strict hygiene, long‑term durability and a clean, upscale look using Trespa® TopLab® Vertical wall panels.
- In recent years, Latvia’s healthcare sector has gained international recognition for highly qualified, flexible and cost‑effective medical services.
- VC4 in Riga is a leading example, offering high‑end treatments at prices up to three to five times lower than in many Western countries.
- Patients from abroad grew from 2,178 (2019) to 4,481 (2023), a 106% increase.
- Dermatology now accounts for over 17% of VC4’s activity.
VC4 needed a surgical unit capable of supporting complex surgeries, endoscopic examinations, and other sophisticated procedures while meeting strict hygiene and workflow requirements.
Key requirements:
- Two operating theatres plus ancillary areas, staff rooms, patient rooms and consultation spaces within a 1,000 m² remodelled building.
- Surfaces that can withstand rigorous, frequent cleaning with aggressive agents.
- Large, smooth wall surfaces with minimal joints to support infection control.
- A calm, clean and upscale visual identity for international patients and demanding medical staff.
Hygiene and cleanability
- TopLab® Vertical offers a closed, non‑porous surface that does not support bacterial growth, a crucial feature in operating theatres.
- Trespa’s proprietary EBC (Electronic Beam Curing) technology gives the panels an exceptionally strong, durable finish and sets them apart from generic HPL.
- The German Fraunhofer Institute independently certified the excellent cleanability of Trespa® TopLab® Vertical.
“Hygiene is paramount – and knowing that Trespa® TopLab® panels will be easy to clean and maintain is very reassuring.”
– Dr. Laura Liepiņa, Plastic Surgeon, VC4

Durability and total cost of ownership
- VC4 considered multiple materials, including tiles, steel and glass, but required a long‑lasting, high‑quality wall solution.
- Trespa® TopLab® Vertical panels are highly resistant to shocks, scratches and aggressive cleaning agents.
- Long‑term performance reduces replacement and maintenance costs, making the material a worthwhile investment over its lifecycle.
“The real point is the total cost of ownership – cleanability, resistance and durability are hard to match.”
– Māris Rēvalds, Founder and CEO, VC4
- Large panel formats helped reduce joint gaps and further improved overall hygiene.
- Panels are available in four sizes, allowing fabricators to combine different formats to minimise cutting waste and optimise material usage.
- Baltimex provided precise fabrication, including cut‑outs that integrate windows into the operating theatre walls.
“Over 20 years later, the wall panels we installed at the Clinical University Hospital have lost nothing of their functional qualities.”
– Vigo Šukteris, CEO and co‑owner, Baltimex
