A HIGHLY VERSATILE HPL PRODUCT FOR THE OPERATION THEATRE AT DRK HOSPITAL MÖLLN-RATZEBURG

Founded in 1985 as a joinery, GHK DOMO now develops and manufactures system components for hospitals and other medical facilities, cleanrooms and laboratories across Europe. The company specialises in modular, tailor-made, flexible operation room systems, sanitary room systems and changing facilities for environments with high hygiene requirements, such as swimming pools, sport facilities and hotels.

AN ‘ALL-TRESPA’ OPERATION THEATRE

The new operation theatre wing at the DRK Hospital is situated in a highly modern building. It’s furnished with the latest equipment and also offers a recovery room of the highest technical standards for the postoperative monitoring and care of patients after their surgery. Thanks to its bright and spacious rooms, the new wing offers an improved work environment for the staff as well.

In this project, Trespa® TopLab® VERTICAL was used for a wide array of applications, accentuating the versality of the product: the furniture, the wall system, the doors, and the ceiling with integrated operation theatre lights. No less than six TopLab® VERTICAL Uni Colours in different shades of white, blue, and green, create a clean and modern look, while ensuring a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere both for patients and employees.

Jens Hoppmann, Executive Partner of GHK DOMO: “This project shows many different applications and solutions, all made with Trespa® TopLab® VERTICAL. For us, it is the best material for these areas, not only because of its cleanability, but also because it’s more flexible than other materials. It allows to build furniture, doors, wall panels, ceilings, all in the same material. What’s so special about this project is that sometimes we only make the wall system, or only the doors, or the furniture, but in this project, everything comes together. And with the different colours, it also looks very nice.”

HYGIENE IS CRUCIAL

In functional medical units, hygiene is always of paramount importance. GHK DOMO offers tailor-made solutions that help meet the highest requirements. Jens Hoppmann added: “For example, we integrated all hardware in the walls, such as the monitors for X-rays and patient information. There are also special solutions for surgery information systems such as HIS (Hospital Information System) and PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) which are designed to manage all the aspects of a hospital’s operation. We can integrate almost everything in our wall systems. That is an advantage from a hygiene point of view. This way, it can be easily cleaned, and you have less corners and angles.”

Jens also highlights some details about the ceiling with integrated operation theatre lights, which is one of their USP’s. “We’ve made a special aluminium construction with LED panels inside and then the Trespa® TopLab® panels. We hang it up from the ceiling, in order to create more space in the ceiling area. It’s a limited space, and you have a lot of installation, air ventilation, electrics.”

When it comes to material choice, cleanability often is the deciding factor. “Other materials can be cheaper, but do not perform so well in terms of cleanability. We have advised the customer and the architect about the material and our systems. We have a small operating room where we could show them how it can be cleaned and that the panels are easily removed from the wall. And in the end they chose HPL panels made by Trespa®. Usability is the best metric.”
